In my work with pastors I often help them distinguish between difficult people and divisive people. A divisive person knows what he is doing and deliberately sets about to destroy unity and create division. A difficult person has no filters, he speaks without thinking, never considering the effect his words will have. He may cause division by his ill-conceived comments but that is not his intent. Difficult people can be corrected gently and helped to be more thoughtful in their remarks. Divisive people need to be identified and avoided. Paul puts it like this, “Now I urge you, brethren, note those who cause divisions and offenses, contrary to the doctrine which you learned, and avoid them” (Romans 16:17 NKJV).
