In no particular order here are some fond memories of Renee. 1) I met Renee because of the color of her hair. Yes her hair. I thought I knew all of the exchange students in Matsuyama but then I kept seeing a person with reddish hair. It took us a while to track each other down but when we did we became fast friends. And surprise Renee was Japanese not a gaijin like me. 2) Whenever I watch inner space I always think of Renee and how we laughed until our sides hurt over a translation. Martin short says something like oh my God, Im possessed and it was translated to oh my Buddha, Im possesed. Renee and I laughed so hard her mom came up to investigate. We couldnt explain to her what was so funny as it just didnt translate. She thought we were crazy. 3) this is my favorite memory. It shows Renees courage, determination and bravery while trying to achieve a goal. When most kids run away from home they go down the street, to the other side of town and in some cases, to another town. Renee ran away to the U.S. and showed up in NY. Not many people would have the courage to do something so extraordinary. We had so much fun while she lived with us until she could go to Ohio and then back home until she could come here permanently. I truly will miss you my friend, Renee Miki! Rest peacefully.
