In occupied Kashmir, the residents of Shopian are facing acute shortage of edibles and other essential commodities in the wake of continued curfew. The residents of many areas of the curfew-bound Shopian said that they were facing acute shortage of essential commodities including medicines.“We have not been able to buy any bread, milk or medicines during the last eight days because of the indefinite curfew,” Nazir Ahmad Rather of Nagbal area of Shopian, informed newsmen over phone. “The ration stocks are also running thin and we fear starvation unless the curfew is relaxed and people are allowed to buy essentials,” he added. Shams-ul-Haq Turray, a retired government teacher from Bongam, Shopian, said, “We are really facing a tough time as major chunk of our food stocks like rice and flour are exhausted and we are unable to purchase them due to continued curfew.” He also expressed concern over the shortage of medicines. He said that his mother was suffering from diabetes and it is necessary for her to take certain medicines and insulin injections daily but she had not taken any dose for past many days. Meanwhile, the police have started investigation into the killing of five youth in two different incidents of CRPF firing in Gagran area of Shopian on September 7 and 11. The police summoned non-local labourers in Shopian district to identify the photograph of one of the four persons killed in the CRPF firing in Gagran on September 7. An eyewitness of the shootout, Maroofa Bano, told a local news gathering agency that the killed person was a non-local labourer. “He was killed because he had witnessed the cold-blooded murder carried out by the CRPF personnel,” the agency quoted Maroofa Bano as saying.
