In order to be a true follower of the Prophet salla Allahu alaihi wa sallam, you must look at the things you do. Anything you do has to have 6 characteristics to ensure that you are following the Prophet, otherwise it is an innovation. It is has to coincide with Islam in 6 things; its reason, type, quantity, how it is performed, time and location. Any form of worship has to have a legitimate reason for doing it mentioned in the Quran and Sunnah. If you do something to get closer to Allah and give it a reason which Allah didn’t legislate, this is an innovation. For example, praying 2 rak’ah every time one enters his home and making it a habit. Though praying is recommended, this is an innovation because the reason is not compliant with the Shariah. Offering salutation on the Prophet salla Allahu alaihi wa sallam after sneezing is also an innovation for the same reason. Ibn Omer may Allah be pleased with him forbade a man from such an innovation when he sneezed. Celebrating the victory on the Day of Badr or the conquest of Makkah is an innovation. It was not done by the Prophet salla Allahu alaihi wa sallam nor his companions. Therefore, everything you do, check it out first to see if the reason is compatible with the Shariah or not. If not, it is an innovation.
