In order to grow as persons, we need to know that we have someone’s unconditional love. There can be no measuring stick, no pan scales, no comparisons, no strings attached to your love for me. I feel secure and safe when you love me even when I’m bad. Your love is a precious gift that will bring happiness and joy. Unconditional love is reflected in words and actions: “I love you. You can’t earn it; you don’t deserve it or prove yourself worthy. You will never have to earn my love, because, I just love you!” If we ask, “Why do you love me?” we headed for trouble! The other person may say, “I love you because you are handsome or beautiful, or you are fun to be with… I quickly draw back, because someday I won’t be handsome or beautiful- I might lose all my hair and my teeth might fall out- and because someday I might not be fun to be with. The question is: “Will you love me then?” Be aware! I might expect someone to love me so that they meet all my needs and desires.. When my expectations exceed reality, and I expect you to love me with perfect love and fulfill all my love needs and desires, then our relationship will collapse, because only God can love me the way I demand. The truth is that God alone loves me unconditionally. He never stops loving me. When I expect you to love me God’s way, I must ask you to forgive me. Your love is only a reflection of God’s love. Once I accept you as another wounded loving person, then both of us can grow to become fully human and fully alive.
