In our efforts to bring more information about the Hampton Terrace Hotel to you at our Annual Meeting, the Heritage Council of North Augusta is proud to announce that our guest speaker on Saturday, January 3rd, will be author and historian Jason Emerson. Mr. Emerson’s appearance is made possible through the generosity of a grant from The Humanities Council of South Carolina and a partnership with the Nancy Carson Library, the City of Aiken and the Aiken County Historical Museum. We would also like to thank our sponsors: Sleep-Inn of North Augusta and Carolina Oaks Bed & Breakfast. The Annual Meeting takes place at the North Augusta Community Center and will start at 11:00 a.m. with an opportunity for our members and the public to view the many artifacts from the famed hotel. New items this year are a golf club and caddy badge from the hotel and the original banquet program from when President-elect Taft dined at the hotel. At 11:30 a.m., Mr. Emerson will speak about his latest book: Giant In the Shadows: The Life of Robert T. Lincoln. Mr. Lincoln was a frequent visitor at the Hampton Terrace Hotel and his signature is in the guest book that is being conserved by the Augusta Museum of History. His topic will be “Robert Todd Lincoln and His Visits to the Hampton Terrace Hotel: He Loved the Links.” Following Mr. Emerson’s lecture, there will be a book signing and the business meeting. The event is from 11:00 a.m.—2:00 p.m. and is free to the public. Mr. Emerson will also appear at Carolina Oaks Bed & Breakfast at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 3rd. He will be joined by Don “Ramblin’” Rhodes and they will speak about the friendship between Lincoln and Marshall Field and their many visits to the Hampton Terrace Hotel. The evening’s talk is entitled: “Dishing the Dessert and the Details.” The cost for this event is $5.00 per person and dessert and hot and cold beverages will be served. Both authors will have their books for sale and signing.
