In our normal consciousness we see the image of the universe—oceans, rivers, mountains, of huge gigantic proportions, and ourselves as a small, observing unit. But in mystical experience, we see the small, observing unit transformed into a colossus, and the world into an image which it holds within itself. This is the main characteristic of the true mystical experience. This is the reason why every mystic considered the vision that was unfolded before him as the vision of God, or of Brahman, or of a prophet, or of a divine being, because the consciousness in the subject now assumes a state of majesty and grandeur and all-pervasiveness which is amazing, and beyond our thought in the normal waking state.
