In our republic we use statistics to shade reality. Nearly every day, and this week was no exception, persons are murdered with nearly complete impunity for the murderer. The authorities ignore the impunity factor while we are supposed to feel that murder is no big thing because statistics supposedly show that violent crime is down. However the impunity factor is a huge debit against any suggestion that we are a civilised country under the rule of law. As usual, the real issues, this time, concerning illegal immigration, are being fudged. In a civilised country, there would be a specialised process relating to immigration offences, including an immigration tribunal to which detainees could take their matters and options for voluntary deportation at the expense of the detainee. We never bothered with this, not least of all because the unscrupulous among us, either make money off of illegal immigrants or exploit them.
