In passive listening, you are like a tape recorder. You are absorbing the information that is given. If the speaker provides a clear message and makes his or her delivery interesting enough to keep our attention, youll probably get most of what the speaker is trying to communicate. Active listening requires you to get inside the speakers mind so that you can understand the communication from his or her point of view. Active listening is hard work because you have to concentrate and have to fully want to understand what the speaker is saying. You must listen objectively without judging content, which is no easy task. There are four requirements for active listening. They are listening with intensity, empathy, acceptance, and a willingness to take responsibility for completeness. Active listening can be difficult and it makes a communicated thought harder for someone to convey. Often I see that persons must explain something a second time so I can be positive I understand what they are thinking. Sometimes people don’t understand you are trying to understand there thinking and they get frustrated because of having to explain again also. When a person gets frustrated or impatient I simply tell them I am just trying to understand what you’re thinking about in the issue. This works well except when they are at fault and then I just don’t say anything people get defensive unnecessarily or can exhibit signs of guilt without being in the wrong.
