In past years, I have been asked a number of times to build projects of reclaimed wood. Ive searched high and low for the stuff and depending on the demands of the project, ive found there are two types: City reclaimed wood, and country reclaimed wood. The photo on the left shows my city lumber supply which consists of mainly true 2 material with some 4 material. Much of it has the desired white lines from the plaster used on walls and ceilings in the olden days as can be seen in on of my projects in photo 3. Also desirable is the darker brown colors and fuzz which I think is from being trapped between uninsulated brick and plaster walls, heated and frozen during the seasons for 100 years or so. The country lumber supply typically has dismantled barn parts which come in large hand hewn timbers and thin, wide boards for the barn siding (Photo 4). Country wood is silver-gray from the sun and fresh air, and sometimes has some old milk paint on it that people are digging these days. Depending on the demands of the project, ill pick one of these two places to search for the perfect material for the project. In both cases, ill spend hours searching and sorting and feeling for the proverbial perfect needles in the in the heavy haystack. Typically about 1% of each type qualifies as deserving of a nice piece of furniture or commercial installation that ill be willing to put my name on. The other 99% is garbage/ugly/useless. Therefore I spend a lot of time digging, lifting and driving long distances for perfect pieces. The next long boring piece will be about how picky and fussy I am about the selection of fine figured roughsawn domestic hardwoods for the more polished typically residential fine furniture pieces (Photo 5). This is the kind of stuff i think about during day to day business and sometimes keeps me up at night. Welcome to my brain.
