In patients with acute stroke who meet eligibility criteria for a tissue plasminogen activator (a drug that helps break down blood clots), a meta-analysis confirmed that intravenous administration of alteplase within 4.5 hours of symptom onset leads to better stroke outcomes. The drug was beneficial regardless of patient age or stroke severity. Alteplase increases the risk for serious and potentially fatal bleeding, so proper patient selection is critical.
