In preparation for the Christmas Day opening of the movie - TopicsExpress

In preparation for the Christmas Day opening of the movie Unbroken, I am re-reading the book. For those who have not read Unbroken: you are wrong, and should correct yourself immediately. Like Hillenbrands other book-turned-movie Seabiscuit, Unbroken is such an incredible, unbelievable story that it must be true (because the difference between truth and fiction, they say, is that fiction has to make sense). If this classic American story - immigrant family, sports, competing in the Olympics, World War II, imprisonment, struggle and hardship unlike any of our first-world problems, redemption, return - is not compelling enough for you, Hillenbrands writing makes the 400-plus pages effortless yet packed with meaning. Like all great authors, she is able to balance depth with crisp and concise sentences just begging to be read with David McCulloughs voice (yes, he was the narrator in the move Seabiscuit). I am a runner, a veteran, a brother - this book speaks to me. Yet this book speaks to all of us who proudly fit into a much broader group - Americans. Read Unbroken this Christmas, then watch the movie.
