In re timpani: Honestly, when I first really considered the timpanos existence (probably sometime in high school, I dunno), I thought of it wholly as a drum -- not a harmonic instrument. Yes, I was aware of its pitch capabilities, but my conceptualization did not include much in the way of pitch. Perhaps its because I play saxophone and I didnt grow up playing in an orchestra which emphasized classical works. Its interesting to consider how one might initially consider the instrument. Today, I think a balanced approach is useful, but I still enjoy thinking of it as a percussive protagonist first. Thoughts?
