In reading Chuck Pfeiffers trip notes, I came across a comment about the beautiful building shown below and Knights of the Range, his novel about an integrated bunch of cowboys riding in support of a beautiful young woman. I had stopped by Joes room last night and told him about the Nairne House...and my my feeling that it was the prototype for the Don Carlos Rancho...he was very excited ,thought this was the Holly Ripple Ranch. (Vol. 3, p.60) I didnt have a lot of luck looking up the Nairne House, but did come up with a place just outside Cimarron called Casa Del Gavilan. In exploring further, I also learned it was called the Nairn House and was once visited by artists and writers. Finally, I found a Washington Post article (washingtonpost/wp-dyn/content/article/2004/08/15/AR2005041502167.html) that stated , this former Washington bookseller also enjoyed hosting writers for extended stays, including Zane Grey, who made the casa the setting for Knights of the Range, which opened by immortalizing the view from Gavilan as the grandest scene in all New Mexico. One thing I know is that Ill be staying there the next time Im in the area (casadelgavilan/)
