In reality, this similar method is still being used until now. When I was younger, it was used by my friends to wake me up so we can altogether attend Midnight Mass (Simbang Gabi or Misa de Gallo) -- a Filipino Christmas tradition which is a series of nine (9) dawn masses, a mass starts as early as 4:00 a.m., begins on December 16 and ends on the midnight of the 24th of December, which is the midnight mass. Some of my friends would tie a rope on their ankle and hang the opposite end of the rope over the 2nd or 3rd floor window so we can pull it to wake them up :D
