In recent times, the concept of servant-leader is becoming very popular among Nigerian political leaders. When I first heard it in 2007, declared by Yaradua and orchestrated by Talba (Governor Muazu Babangida Aliyu), I was elated because what I knew to be servant-leadership in Christs pattern is beautiful and that is exactly what Nigeria needs at the moment, however, I still doubt if they really knew what they were declaring at the moment. My hopes then were for a leadership that listens to those who society has decided to neglect just as Jesus gave Mary Magdalene and Blind Barthemeus a sense of belonging. I looked forward to a situation where pensioniers will be given justice and prompt attention, having given their prime to service of our nation. I feel bad seeing how these old men and women beg to feed; how they die of exhaustion and harassment in the hands of political mistakes planted around government establishments. It is disturbing to see how murderers called pension officers get applauded in the society while people are dying at their gates every other day. I looked forward to a situation where the poor would have access to his leaders and not been harassed by protocols, a situation where the so called servants will go to the homes and sick beds of their poor masters (not in the eyes of the camera). I wish the government officials will leave their homes at 7am for a function slated for 8am instead of harassing poor pedestrians and motorists on the road who are made to pay for the poor time management skills of their elected leaders. It was when I saw how government officials and protocols use whips and other dehumanizing means to scare us away from the road so that our governors will have quick passage in a traffic terrain that I knew that the best driving skill in Nigeria is fearlessness. I hoped that government officials will reduce the number of cars in their convoys and people in their entourage especially during international travels, so that monies could be channeled into meaningful ventures. Why cant government and ASUU exercise common sense and allow the children of the poor go back to government universities (it is not everyone that can afford the tuition for private universities and universities abroad where the members of ASUU and their government partners in evil are sending their children). What I see now is far from being classified as servant-leadership. As we celebrate Christ the universal King, I call on all to reflect on the style of leadership practiced in Nigeria and pray hard for true service to the people. We are losing hope in the sincerity and purposeful leadership interest of the political office seekers. A leader should be driven by a sense of responsibility and not looting. Happy Christ the King celebration
