In recent weeks the ALS ice bucket challenge has enveloped social media, bringing much needed awareness to a life altering disease and of course donations needed for research and improvement to patients quality of life. Ive seen quite a few people express disdain at the wastage of clean water when there are millions without access to potable water or in other cases causes that are closer to guyana, like poverty and orphanages. I agree that these are all valid points but one must realize that ALS is not a first world disease, ALS is not strictly a degenerative disease that affects caucasian race or better stated European descendants. The fact is ALS auto immune and while it might not be as prevalent or wildly heard of in Guyana, there are guyanese diagnosed with ALS and more importantly there are guyanese undiagnosed and suffering with ALS. So while ALS might not affect a great percentage as poverty does; it still exists. Thats like saying to an ALS patient they are less important than the impoverished, or better yet speak to a parent who has to watch their child suffer. So to those of you who have an opinion about the wasteful foreign minded guyanese maybe you should research why its an ICE bucket challenge and not a hot water or just water challenge. No cause is more important than the next. We choose to support a cause based on personal beliefs and rational, so next time u have the overwhelming urge to criticize and be condescending...take that energy and research the cause you are about to criticize or maybe find a cause you identify with and donate to that one! To each his own.
