In recent weeks the Federal Government investigation into the alleged misappropriation of child care fee assistance by a small number of family day care services has resurfaced in the media. Family Day Care Australia (FDCA) has, for some time, been working closely with the Department of Education regarding this issue to assist in indentifying and eradicating this behaviour and, to protect the family day care brand from the actions of a small but potentially damaging minority. FDCA is aware that these stories have understandably created a degree of concern within the sector and have been at the centre of discussion across social media groups and forums. While FDCA cannot control what is written in the media, nor prevent the media from publishing facts, we would like to reassure the membership that we allocate considerable resources in proactively monitoring, managing and positioning family day care in the media and, where required and/or appropriate correcting inaccuracies, providing a balanced viewpoint and at every opportunity promoting the professional and quality early childhood education and care delivered by family day care services and educators across the country. The Department of Education is undertaking targeted compliance action as well as conducting an educational campaign to increase awareness and reiterate to service providers and educators their obligations under family assistance law which in turn may result in additional media attention. We urge you to reassure colleagues who may be concerned about this issue that FDCA is well informed and well prepared to manage the issue in the media. In order that we deliver clear and consistent messages about this situation FDCA offers the services of our Media and Communications Team to manage any media enquiries regarding this matter; email [email protected] If you have any immediate concerns relating to questionable practices by services contact the Department of Education on 1800 664 231 or at [email protected]
