In recent years Ive drifted quite a ways from the very conservative that I used to be. Thats okay, I kinda like hanging out in the middle. I feel like Ive removed any blinders and all info is allowed in for me to process. Funny thing about the blinders is that you dont realize that some info is not even allowed in to incubate. I see them on all sides of all issues and my opinion as to the scariest thing about what these blinders make invisible, is the existence of the blinders themselves. But I digress. Ferguson... 1. If someone feels that the prosecutor was never seeking an indictment and did his job with that mindset; if someone thinks that an indictment was justified and the family of the dead deserved their day in court; if someone can rationally, logically, articulately and with decency convince me of this; I will listen. If I agree, theyd have my support. If they cant, Im sorry. I listened with an open mind, I tried but I couldnt agree, I did what I could. 2. If someone tells me that the cops in a given area often race bait; if someone tells me that part of the population are made to feel like they have no value; and if someone can demonstrate this; I will listen. If I agree, theyd have my support. But if you cannot walk away and fight the fight the right way, if you attack a cop, whether you feel baited or not, and you do this moments after Ive seen you steal from and intimidate a small shop owner...Im sorry, youve lost me. You want me to fight for you? Be someone worth fighting for. 3. Youll easily convince me that some cops abuse their position. Youll never convince me that they all do. 4. Youll easily convince me that racial profiling exists and that good people get bad attitudes because of it. Youll even have my support in rooting it out and removing it. But youre going to have to excuse my waning enthusiasm when I watch the victims, in droves, say with their actions, the cause can wait, I want some free gin and wiper blades. 5. Its difficult to rise above. Probably more so for some than Ill ever experience personally. But if you want something, youre going to have to, somehow, do just that. If not, youre going to lose the support of some who might have been willing to be allies. And if you cant, some people, myself included, are going to reasonably ask, Do you really want a solution, or do you just want the fight? Does that mean I havent drifted all way away from my conservative self? Or does it mean that one side or the other isnt always wrong.
