"In reclaiming the Asian American identity, we do not shed our distinct cultural identities, just as the workers’ movement transcends national borders and the fight for voting rights transcends race. I am still Chinese American, my friend is still Indian American. We use the term “Asian American” to support the disadvantaged amongst us, collectively take down myths, and encourage each other’s success. We are connected by our common experience of “otherness” and growing up in a strong dual-identity environment. Minority groups have historically united to advocate for each other. Few Americans realize that the first confidante who rushed to Malcom X’s aid after he was shot was a Japanese American activist, Yuri Kochiyama. Still further back in history, one of the most outspoken groups for the abolition of slavery was white women. “Asian American” is an identity for a united front. It does not mean we give up our individuality and succumb to generality – it means we are stronger together. When we redefine what it means to be Asian American, we together can address the needs of our community and reveal the true diversity of our collective."
