In recognition of National Fire Prevention Week, the City of York Department of Fire/Rescue Services, in cooperation with York’s Historic Prospect Hill Cemetery, will conduct a Fallen Firefighter Remembrance service on Friday, October 11, 2013, at 11:00am. The service will commemorate the eleven York City firefighters who have died in the line of duty since 1904. It will be held at Prospect Hill Cemetery’s Court of Valor Monument, which is located near the cemetery’s Pennsylvania Avenue entrance. The Court of Valor Monument is a granite archway topped with an iconic piece of steel from the World Trade Center, weighing 3,000 pounds and measuring 9’ 11” in length. The monument not only recognizes local service men but also is a memorial to honor our nation’s first responders. The ceremony will include a roll call of fallen firefighters, and will also be marked by the unveiling of two Fallen Firefighter banners, which feature the names of the eleven York City firefighters that have died in the line of duty. Prospect Hill is an appropriate place for this service, as 8 of the 11 fallen York City firefighters are buried at Prospect Hill and Greenmount Cemeteries. The ceremony is open to the public. In honor of those lost, the Department will also display firefighter flags at each fallen firefighters’ graves and Prospect Hill will provide maps to visitors who wish to take a tour.
