In reference to yesterdays attack here in our hometown of Ottawa, I am sad to hear how this all unfolded. An innocent man was killed, and that is something that I condemn as a person, and as a Muslim. And yet some Canadians, in part due to the stereotyping representations made by the media, are putting the blame on Muslims as a whole, fearing and mistrusting us. It is important to realize that an intention of dividing Canadians is evident in such attacks, as Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau pointed out: Losing ourselves to fear and speculation is the intention of those who commit these heinous acts. And as NDP Leader Tom Mulcair stated: It was intended to make us more fearful of our neighbours and less confident in ourselves. But it has failed. Todays events have instead only succeeded in drawing us closer, in making us stronger. We woke up this morning in a country blessed by love, diversity and peace, and tomorrow we will do the same. Canada is shaken today, but we shall not waver. And so, let us all remember that we are all Canadians, Muslims and non-Muslims, and that we collectively condemn such acts of aggression towards our innocent fellow-citizens. My condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of Cpl. Nathan Cirillo. #NotInMyName #CanadianMuslimCondemning22October2014AttackOnOttawa
