In regard to the child immigration crisis, Ive seen a lot of people question why children from Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador are arriving here when we give foreign aid to their countries. In 2013, we gave $52 million to Honduras; $84 million to Guatemala; and $27 million to El Salvador, for a total of $162 million. Gov. Perrys deployment of the National Guard to the Texas border will cost $144 million -- thats more than our foreign aid to Honduras and Guatemala combined. However, U.S. companies did $9.8 billion in business in Honduras alone. Drug gangs are a problem in Honduras, but a bigger problem is that the democratically elected government was overthrown in a coup in 2009. Some believe Chiquita foods was a major instigator of the coup. But companies such as Addidas, Nike and The Gap urged the Obama Administration to help restore a democratically elected government in Honduras, but Republicans in Congress have blocked those efforts. Perhaps a good place to start in seeking a solution to this problem is to ask your federal representative whether they support restoring democracy to Honduras.
