In reply to an earlier comment posted on this thread by the great republican campaigner Edna Thomas, "Putting the technical points to one side for a minute, the underlying message of the “it’s going to cost us millions/billions” argument is that we should allow ourselves to be held to ransom by one family." "Is this the case? Can you show where any member of the royal family, either directly or by implication has forced the UK to submit to their will by threat of financial ruin? The royal family does far more than you credit them for both in the UK and abroad. They are the symbolic heart of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth. They have served in the military, often in as great a danger as any other member of the armed forces. How many American political leaders have done the same while holding elected office? The United Kingdom and by extension the royal family, are admired by the people and leaders of many other nations, not for what they may or may not own but for their pride, dignity and love for their country. It is of course the will of your nation to decide how to conduct your affairs of state, your internal government, how your nation goes about the business of insuring the will of people, their safety and welfare. However to imply one of the greatest nations on the planet is being held for ransom by the royal family? Absurd, spiteful and an insult to the intelligence of people of the UK."
