In researching ethanol production today, I came across some information about using apples for mash. Since apple trees are hardwood and some of the best burning for home heating, were definitely going to plant an apple orchard. The lye from the hardwood ash can be used for soap making as well as making biodiesel using wasted deep fryer oil from restaurants. Another necessary ingredient for making biodiesel is methanol which is a byproduct of turning apples into ethanol. I found a website that says theres, 25-50 mg of methanol in one single apple and another website that lists three fast growing apple trees that grow well in zones 3-8: Red Delicious, Yellow Delicious and Early Harvest all of which grow about 25 inches or more per year and bares fruit well after 3 to 6 years from seed. Cross pollination is necessary so planting multiple varieties is essential. These varieties grow between 10 to 25 feet in height. Im thinking that an apple orchard might be a better use of space than potatoes, at least as a large crop. Another vegetable crop with multiple varieties of heirloom plants of all sorts would be best for consumption while the orchard would be mainly for fuel. Until the apples are ready though, I found a website on where to go to pick your own apples (and other fruits and veggies).
