In response to my question, Dep. Pres Kgalema Mothlante undertook that the cabinet would table amendments to the executive ethics act in Parliament during September 2013. That would include effective powers to act and discipline members of cabinet who get involved in corrupt activities, such as in the current Dina Pule controversy. It is generally accepted that Parliament’s slap on the wrist penalties for Pule was hopelessly inadequate even though it was the maximum that they could do. We have been waiting for this since 2010 when the Public Protector recommended that the code required revision.
