In response to the Toronto Star article published on January 8th, 2015 entitled “Pedro the kitten’s rescuer facing fraud investigation” the Toronto Humane wishes to make the following statement: The Toronto Humane Society has provided all medical care for Pedro since his surrender to us on December 3rd. It is estimated that Pedros current medical costs amount to approximately $1000 and that there will be no future costs related to his injuries. We wish to clarify that the Toronto Humane Society was in no way connected to the Indiegogo campaign. The campaign site clearly states Funds will be used to pay for his present medical needs as well as his post-operative and rehabilitation care. This statement has also been reported widely in the media. The dollars raised through the Indiegogo campaign have not been directed to Pedros care. Pedros care was paid for by the generous donors of the Toronto Humane Society. The Toronto Humane Society received numerous calls from individuals with questions regarding their contributions to this campaign. Additionally, on December 16th the Toronto Humane Society received an email from the campaigns administrator that caused us concern and precipitated a call to the Toronto Police. It is our understanding that the Toronto Police are investigating this situation. Further the Toronto Humane Society will not accept funds that are raised under false pretense and therefore will not accept the funds raised through the Indiegogo campaign. Pedro remains in the care of the Toronto Humane Society. Mandi Howard has indicated her interest in adopting Pedro and the Toronto Humane Society has made it very clear to her that once Pedro is recovered she will be first in line to adopt Pedro. This has been communicated to Mandi numerous times both verbally and in writing throughout the month of December including as recently as yesterday. The Toronto Humane Society remains committed to ensuring Pedro receives the best of care during his recovery.
