In solidarity and compassion - K *** Ce qui transforme (2014 – Moïse Marcoux-Chabot) While there are still 2+ days to vote for this film in the Rencontres Internationales du Documentaire de Montréal (see below for details) - there are many steps along the journey to this moment, and many more ahead… (*TW: notes on trauma, police brutality, torture, and disbelieving survivors) *** Ce qui transforme (or “That which transforms”) is learning your loved one has been detained, tortured, threatened by police for no other reasons than for walking down the street; the realization that that which has been intellectualized has nothing to do with the way your heart stops beating, and your bones shattering into a million pieces as you understand the feeling, the embodiment, of your life breaking and the long road ahead towards picking up the pieces. This is not about a bylaw. Ce qui transforme, are the silences that follow, the questions, the good will and desire of loved ones to save you, except they know that they can’t, because this incredible violence has already happened. It has entered your home. It’s in your bed, it haunts your sleep, in your skin that feels like shards of glass. It’s in the awkwardness. It’s in the doubt of people asking you if you wouldn’t like to seek out this type of help or that, not really knowing. For we are not organised. Ce qui transforme, is the rage, the repetition of that feeling of being caged for no justifiable reason, for no matter how many people tell you to let it go, you have lived it, you can still see it, the reality of this violence, and others’ wilful ignorance only serves to isolate you from each other more. Ce qui transforme, is the meeting of an artist (Moise) and the courage of a poet (Biron) and the moment someone offers to shine a light on you and listen, simply listen. Not tell you what to think, to choose your words, how to heal, but offer you the space to be seen, to be heard, to be honest. Your story is not more, or less, important than others. It is your story, and you tell it in hopes of others telling theirs, of coming out of our cages, of some echoing of truth and justice. Ce qui transforme, is what isn’t easy. It is traumatic, it’s that elusiveness that cannot be summed up with psychoanalysis or whatever harassment the judicial process has in store for you. It is the deepening of our notions of radicalisation, that is the search for roots, for community, for the true meaning of solidarity. For how we can be there for one another when your life, as you knew it, falls apart. For the parts of it you inevitably have to walk alone. Ce qui transforme, asks you to turn towards that pain. I urge you, don’t turn away. I have lived the depths of such love that can burn me to the ground, and the teachings of compassion that have breathed life and water and gratitude back into me again. Turn towards the pain, don’t turn away. Please, watch this film. Share it with your family and friends, and discuss it together afterwards. By reaching out to that person next to you, we come to know the depths of our love, of our collective responsibility, of this monstrous machine we are holding up together, and the opportunities we have to undo this injustice with every gesture, in every moment, every day. In solidarity and struggle, KRH – 18.11.14 *** Pour que ce film reçoive un prix de Télé-Québec et des Rencontres Internationales du Documentaire de Montréal.
