In studying Tosca, I have come to the opinion that the libretto is an absolute masterpiece and a beautiful feminist manifest, WAY ahead of its time. Illica and Gaicosa have painted Tosca as a woman who sees herself as a person, first and foremost. I think the fact Cavaradossi and Tosca are not married allows the audience to see her as Tosca, as opposed to Cavaradossis wife. And whether they were aware of it or not, they painted perfectly the inner emotional turmoil of strong women: the guilt/ fear of being judged for being outspoken; the confusion felt when they are objectified; the appreciation and love of the men who do support them as strong women; the feeling that these supportive men are somehow also punished for being supportive of an outspoken woman; the exhaustion that can come from the constant need to fight for equality and rights to independant personhood; the horrible, trapped feeling when they are punished for being strong; the revulsion when some men try to dominate or force strong women in to subissive or objectified roles; the satisfaction of winning a battle; the desire to be rescued even though you are also the rescuer; the feeling of futility when trying to shape culture; the constant death and rebirth of a respected view of women in society
