In summer, all Austin-area shelters and rescues hit capacity and beyond: it’s the busiest time of year for stray and feral animals to breed and wind up in the shelter system. Groups like Austin Pets Alive pull animals from the City shelter, put them in foster, and get them adopted. This is Filbert. Filbert was surrendered to Austin Animal Center with extreme mange and skin infections back in April, and he also exhibited a set of then-mysterious neurological symptoms. Fast forward to today (current pictures): he is healthy, happy, and ready for adoption from Austin Pets Alive. It chills me that without ~$20 of medication for his mange, ~$5/month medication to manage his brain condition, and some love, he would’ve died at 3 years old. He’s been my foster since the day APA pulled him, and I can tell you that he is the happiest little dog I’ve ever met---gets along with other dogs, cats, kids, etc. Filbert and other rescue animals will be available for adoption today at the Austin Pet Expo. If you are thinking of adopting a pet, please come by to see us 12-6pm at the Palmer Event Center! When you adopt a rescue animal, you save TWO lives: the life of your new family member, and the life of the animal who can then be housed in the shelter’s kennel rather than being euthanized due to lack of space. #filbertfoster
