In tending, the instinct evaluation is the same thing youd do in early training. So really, a dogs evaluation IS his first lesson. Well show him the border & explain that he has his side & the sheep & humans have their side. The dog should try REPEATEDLY to cross... & we REPEATEDLY say nope. Our herding breed dogs are pretty smart, so they figure out quickly that they cant cross the border. Next step takes a bit more time... we have to _patiently_ wait for the dog to teach itself that it is working the sheep (influencing their behavior) from outside the border. Once the dog figures this out... you move on to larger borders while the sheep eat grass. Doing REAL work. A dog that knows one border could cut the grass in a ditch along the road or along a driveway. If you only want to see if your dogs have instinct, you sign up for one day. If you want to keep working, sign up for 2 days & multiples. The workshop part will be similar both days as some people can only attend one day. OH... and I forgot to mention... people will be working the clinic even when their dog is not working. Itll be a busy day for dogs & their humans! If youre not at all sure what Tending is... come out (with chair & sensible shoes) to audit.
