In terms of equine coat color genetics there is no difference - TopicsExpress

In terms of equine coat color genetics there is no difference between chestnut and sorrel, but some horse enthusiasts insist that chestnut and sorrel are two distinct colorations. However, there seems to be no clear consensus on what the distinction is. Some argue that sorrel should be used to describe only lighter shades (which is what I was taught), or shades with a very clear reddish tint, while chestnut denotes darker shades or shades with more brown in them. Anyway, just for fun... since I grew up calling a lighter red horse a sorrel and the brightest, truest red chestnut, what on earth do I call my new mare Rosa? Shes Peruvian Paso not QH or Mustang Im used to so I almost automatically wanna call her chestnut just because shes a different breed. She also has what looks to be some flaxen and since I have never heard of sorrel with flaxen this too makes me lean toward chestnut rather than sorrel... what do you guys think? This picture was taken by her previous owners daughter, I can take a new one if I have to.
