In the 16th over of Indian Innings, I and Rajivji had an interesting discussion. Issue was whether India was going to win. I was of the opinion that the team batting later has an advantage as they know the target and can pace themselves. I was coming from goal setting theory which says that if you have goals, you are more focussed and you have better chances of making it than if you just want to do good. So, the team batting later has denote targets by this token and has better chances. Rajivji pointed out that the goal here was assigned was others. Goal setting theory says that left to themselves, people assign easier goals, but they are more committed to them and hence are more likely to achieve it. By this token, externally assigned goals may not generate more commitment. So net net what should happen, we were left thinking. What do my friends with an interest in Cricket feel about it? Does their experience validate goal setting theory? :-))
