In the 18th century, hats were made out of animal fur. Hat makers, hatters, used Mercuric Chloride (Mercury) to treat and mold the furs. Because of the constant exposure to the toxic chemical of Mercury, the Hatters would develop nerve damage [Mercury Poisoning], both mental and physical. This caused an outward appearance of twitching and tremors, in addition to incoherent vocalizations of gibberish. Thus the colloquial phrase: Mad as a Hatter.
