In the 1950s, Detroit was Americas fourth-largest city and its residents enjoyed one of Americas highest per-capita incomes. But, since then, Detroits corrupt politicians, rather than focusing on helping its residents to defend their innate (God-given) rights, have instead focused on compelling its residents to fund inefficient ineffective public goods/services, while wasting their tax dollars on big-ticket scams that benefited corrupt business special interests. Its arguably become harder to distinguish any significant difference between Detroits criminals, who run amok, and its bureaucrats, who either collect fees from businesses that violate ridiculous regulations or accept bribes for overlooking such violations. Such an abysmal status quo encouraged Detroits residents (including its employers), in the absence of a local iron curtain, to gradually escape to freer (and safer) places elsewhere in these United States. And, as Detroits population dwindled, and its standard-of-living declined, its landscape has consisted increasingly of crumbling ruins rather than prospering industry. And, now, Detroits remaining impoverished residents, too many of whom are either unemployed or even criminal, can no longer easily afford to pay either their horde of expensive public bureaucrats (both current and retired), or their municipal creditors, which is why Detroit is seeking to declare bankruptcy. In a sense, Detroit governed itself to death, rather like the former U.S.S.R. Lets please demand better of our own public officers, so as to avoid repeating Detroits bad example. Heres a Ben Swann article about the latest development in this sad saga.
