In the 1994 Western Open, golfer Davis Love III called a one-stroke penalty on himself. After marking his ball on the green, he wasnt sure that he had replaced it in the right spot, so he gave himself an extra stroke. That one stroke caused him to miss the tournament cut, and he went home without earning any money. (If he had made the cut, even finishing last, he would have earned $2,000.) This was important because at years end Love was $590 short in the winnings needed to automatically qualify for the 1995 Masters, one of golfs premier events. Fortunately, he qualified with a win the week before the Masters and went on to a second-place finish in that tournament. Later he was asked how he would have felt if he had missed it because of calling a penalty on himself. The real question, he said, is how I would have felt if I hadnt and spent the rest of my life wondering if Id cheated. Davis Love III always plays to win, but he does it the right way. I remember this story when Im tempted to take a shortcut on my morning jog or choose potato chips instead of fruit with my lunchtime sandwich. Thats a form of cheating. And worse, its cheating myself. --Joe Piscatella
