In the 2009 Greek Elections, the Socialist Party (PASOK) got 44% of the vote. Syriza (Coalition of the Radical Left) got 4.6% of the vote. Six years later, after wave after wave of brutal austerity, of mass unemployment (up to 70% for the youth), mass poverty, privatization and police repression of the workers. Six years of youth movements and waves of general strikes. Six years of betrayals by the reformist PASOK. In the 2015 Greek elections, PASOK collapsed to 4.7% of the vote. Syriza saw a magnificent rise to 36.4%. Let that be a lesson that capitalism teaches. And that the workers learn. The effect of the capitalist crisis has unquestionably been one of polarization and radicalization. Let that be a lesson for pessimistic revolutionaries who think that workers are sheep and wont fight. Let that also be a warning to reformist everywhere, including in Syriza leadership. Any attempt to fix capitalism, will mean administering capitalism and its crisis, and its austerity. It means being on the leash of the bankers and big corporate powers, and the unelected capitalist state - or facing their sabotage. Syriza will face a crossroads; socialism or austerity. Any attempt at the middle-of-the-road will present serious dangers, sabotage and pressure on the party.
