In the 50s from Longview there was Caddo Lake, Sabine River and Little Cypress Creek. Most of us who fish had been to all of them at one time or another. I loved fishing and hunting on Little Cypress Creek. I was catching catfish regularly in certain places. I talked about it with some of my friends. One of my friends, Johnny Deutsch, wanted to go with me. I really didnt think Johnny would want to stay in the bottoms all night so I tried to discourage him. There were a lot of wolves in the bottoms at that time and I saw them frequently. They never bothered me and I loved to listen to them calling each other. Sometime after 3:00 AM to 4:00Am they would start calling each other from their hunting and pack together and go to their dens. It would start with one howling long and low and then another would join in and then another and in a few minutes the woods would be ringing with their howls. If you have never heard these sounds you are truly missing something. Johnny and I got together and left Longview and drove north toward Harleton late in the afternoon. When we came to Little Cypress Creek, we parked the car off the road and unloaded all of our gear we had to carry. We walked up the creek with the gear about a mile before we came to where I wanted to fish. It was warm and Johnny was sweating a lot. I picked out a campsite and let Johnny start gathering fire wood to last all night. I found some poles I had used previously, so I rigged them up and walked down the bank of the creek and selected places to place them. The creek was still flowing. I baited the hooks with big shiners I had bought earlier. Night was beginning to fall, so we built a fire and spread our sleep stuff out. We ate some of the food we brought and just laid around for several hours. We got up and went to look at all our lines and be sure they were still baited sometime around mid-night. I think we had two catfish on our lines at that time we took off and took back to the camp. It was a really dark night. We were tired and sleepy, so we stretched out on our blankets and passed out pretty fast. Sometime around 3:30 a wolf gave out a long, low howl. Johnny jumped up and said Whats that? I told him it was just a wolf calling to the others. In a few minutes another one answered closer to us. In a short period of time they were all directions from us howling.I guess Johnny had never heard them before. He looked scared. Then something howled a few feet behind Johnny and he took off running in the dark as hard as he could go. Several hours earlier we had heard some coon hunters way in the distance from us. One of their hounds had come up close to us and laid down and went to sleep right behind Johnny. I didnt know he could run so fast! But he eventually woke up to the fact that he was in cold blackness and no light. He ran even faster back to our camp than he did away from it. I laughed so hard I was crying. Johnny never asked me to let him go fishing with me again on Little Cypress.
