In the Catholic tradition, November 13 is the feast day of the patron saint of immigrants, St. Frances Xavier Cabrini. According to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, an act before Congress called the SAFE (Strengthen and Fortify Enforcement) Act goes too far in responding to the results of our immigration system. The USCCB maintains that this legislation will criminalize undocumented immigrants and those who work with them, as well as increase detentions and deportations and encourage racial profiling and unconstitutional detentions, without fixing any of the real problems of the broken immigration system in this country. On the Feast of Mother Cabrini, Nov. 13, the USCCB urges you to call your Congressional delegation to oppose the SAFE Act (HB 2278) and to support a well-thought-out immigration reform that protects the United States, while providing a road to citizenship for the millions of undocumented immigrants who have been here for years. The toll-free number you can use on Nov. 13 is (855) 589-5698. The basic message to your representative is I oppose the SAFE Act (HB 2278) and I support comprehensive immigration reform. The U.S. Bishops and immigrant families thank you for your support, and Catholic Charities thanks you for your attention, and your commitment to our Catholic mission.
