In the Des Moines Register today ... Report: Iowa one of worst states for safe driving 1:26 PM, Jan 22, 2014 | by Daniel Finney Iowa is one of the 11 worst states in the nation for driving safety laws, according to a report by the Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety. The annual report grades all 50 states and the District of Columbia on 15 traffic safety laws the group views as key to saving lives. Iowa was marked down for deficiencies in safety laws including: – Not requiring a helmet for all motorcycle riders. – Not raising the minimum age for a learner’s permit to 16. Iowa law allows permits at age 14. – Not requiring a breath-analysis device on the starters of vehicles for all convicted of driving while intoxicated. The green states — those the group believes have the safest driving laws — are California, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Maine, Oregon, Rhode Island, Washington state and Washington, D.C. The red states — those the group believes has the poorest driving safety laws are — Alabama, Arizona, Florida, Iowa, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming.
