In the July 7, 2014, issue of the Lincoln (Nebraska) Journal-Star re: the racist float in the Norfolk, Nebraska, Independence Day Parade: Dale Remmich of rural Norfolk created the float and was present at the Sunday meeting. In an interview with the Norfolk Daily News, he said the mannequin was not a depiction of President Barack Obama, but rather a representation of himself and his frustration with the president’s management of the Veterans Affairs Department. He did not intend for the float to make a racial statement, he said. “I’ve got my bibs on, my walker, I’m covering my ears and I’m turning a bit green. I intended it to look like a zombie who has had enough,” Remmich said. My response to those paragraphs was: Wow, Mr. Remmich, if you cant stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen. Your very poor excuse that this was a representation of yourself does not hold up to any scrutiny at all. Why call the outhouse the Obama Presidential Library if the character on the float wasnt intended to be the sitting US President? Why not paint a sign that says Department of Veterans Affairs? Or VA Offices? Dont hide your racist light under a bushel, dear sir, simply because you are now afraid to face the consequences of your ill-considered actions.
