In the NY Times Book Review this weekend, Patricia Cornwall got asked what book she would tell the president to read. She said he should read Cleopatra, by Stacy Schiff. WHAT!!! First of all, its not a very good book. Second of all, it has little to say to a modern politician. If I had the chance to tell Obama to read a book, I have not one but TWO contenders that Ive read recently. Nation, by Terry Pratchett, would be one of them. It is a wonderful story about what makes a group a nation. The other would be The Good Son, by Michael Gruber. A stinging commentary on our modern political snarl, with a great human drama, which still manages to be upbeat... somehow....
