In the New Testament times men and women who believed in Christ, repented and were buried with Christ for forgiveness received the gift of the Holy Spirit. The gift of Holy Spirit was to have the New Testament written on their hearts. To confirm what they were preaching was true, they were given the power to confirm the message by signs and wonders. What is the point of miracles if there is no message? The power to confirm by signs and wonders was the seal or the pledge that proved that what the Christians were saying about the gospel was true as found in the New Testament. Ephesians 1:13 “In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation-- having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, 14 who is given as a pledge of our inheritance, with a view to the redemption of Gods own possession, to the praise of His glory.” The apostle Paul could confirm that he was a true apostle by laying his hands on the Corinthians who were Christians so they could know the will of God and confirm it with various signs and wonders as we read in the New Testament. Paul reminded the Corinthians that, 2 Corinthians 3:2, “You are our letter, written in our hearts, known and read by all men; 3:3 being manifested that you are a letter of Christ, cared for by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone, but on tablets of human hearts.” Once Christians received the gift of the Holy Spirit they did not need anyone to teach them because they had the anointing, the gift of the Holy Spirit. If they used this gift they could teach others and confirm it by signs and wonders. 1 John 2:27, “And as for you, the anointing which you received from Him abides in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you; but as His anointing teaches you about all things, and is true and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you abide in Him.” Today, what they knew and confirmed, we have it written as the New Testament which is the same thing that they had in their hearts. We don’t need to confirm it with signs and wonders because the New Testament has been completely revealed. Hebrews 4:12, “For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” So Jude the brother James, both being half-brothers to Jesus wrote in his letter by the Holy Spirit that the gospel, the New Testament was completed because he told the Christians to earnestly contend for the faith that was once and for all delivered unto the Saints. We read in his letter, Jude 1:3, “Beloved, while I was making every effort to write you about our common salvation, I felt the necessity to write to you appealing that you contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints.” Love from don
