In the Olde days it was called a Luthiers Mark. Today they call it self-bound. Its nothing more than using the same material for binding as the sides of the guitar. Utilizing the same material was supposed to preclude, or at least reduce, the chances of a crack or a separartion at the joint. The theory being that both parts would move at the same rate when exposed to environmental changes (heat, cold, humidity etc.) Some folks will tell you that it was something a Luthier did when he built the instrument for himself. I think maybe some of the old guys were either pinching pennies or they were just showing off.
