In the Peckham home of the Harkin family lived an elderly English - TopicsExpress

In the Peckham home of the Harkin family lived an elderly English lady called Miss Carter. She was a sitting tenant when the Harkin family bought the property in the early 1960s; they were Irish and unknown to her. Marina Harkin, my sister-in-law & old friend, was born there in 39 Fenwick Rd. Marina had 3 older brothers, always by her side. Miss Carter gradually grew very close to the family; shared Christmas times, Easter times & my late Mum in Law Nan Harkin nursed her through her many illnesses and eventual passing away. So now to the point of my post, on this sad night of recalling the start of The Great War. Miss Carter and her late mother Mrs Carter had sadly lost their beloved Brother and Son, George Sidney Carter towards the end of that awful conflict. Their lives were changed forever by that loss.....Mrs Carter never recovered from the death of her only Son, and Miss Carter became the chief carer and wage-earner. Miss Carter therefore never married and had a family of her own..... Upon the death of Miss Carter, a treasure trove of letters, photographs, medals, memorabilia and poignant postcards and notes from her beloved Brother George was left to the Harkin family for safe-keeping. It is looked after to this day, and it seems the right time to share just a few appropriate images & letters - all to do with a very handsome, promising, kind-hearted & brave young Man, George Sidney Carter. May You Rest In Peace.
