In the Rural Areas of PNG; where you do not have the luxury of Blood Transfusion Services and other Basic Life Saving Equipment; Some Sacrifices have to be Made. Seen here is a young doctor giving his own blood to save the life of a patient. He is working in a Rural Hospital in the Gulf Province. Donating blood for one of my patients with a severely low haemoglobin. Out in the bush we don’t have the refrigeration facilities for blood storage so whenever we have to do emergency transfusions we just whip the blood out of the nearest compatible donor and after the appropriate screening tests it goes straight into the patient. After saying a word of thanks the patient said to me: “I wish I was not sick, so that if you ever needed blood, I could return this favour”. She is HIV positive. Give blood today, somebody out there will really appreciate it. ( Dr Patrick Koliwan)
