In the Season 4 finale of The Vampire Diaries, Katherine (Nina Dobrev) became human after 500 years of vampirism. Judging by the look on her face when Elena shoved the cure down her throat and her haphazard hairdo in the Season 5 promo, Katherine is not pleased with this turn of events. But we think she should be! Here are five reasons Katherine is better off human. Humans are rare ...on this show. There was a time when the supernatural to human ration in Mystic Falls was somewhat balanced or — dare we say it — tipped towards humanity. Not anymore! Being a vampire, werewolf, or witch is old hat in this town. The novelty lies in being human (just ask Matt Donovan, who is rumored to have a focal role in the upcoming season). Being a vampire is so last millennium. The 2000s are all about humanity. Maybe Klaus will stop chasing her For Klaus, there doesn’t seem to be a punishment other than death good enough for Katherine Pierce. Even after she giving Klaus the cure (well, technically, she gave it to Elijah to give to Klaus), he still more or less wants her dead. For the time being, she’s lured Klaus to New Orleans where he’ll stay busy with The Originals, but that can’t last forever. Will Klaus deem Elena’s unwanted humanity as a punishment worse than death and finally call off the hounds? Perhaps… She might have a shot at happiness Let’s face it: Katherine is pretty much her own worst enemy. The woman has lived for over 500 years but we’ve yet to see her really happy for longer than her latest fling. She sabotaged her own happiness in exchange for power and security. That won’t necessarily change now that she’s human, but at least she won’t be able to kill, maim, and manipulate people quite as easily. That might help the situation. She could have kids We’re not really sure how this vampire cure thing works, but Rebekah seemed to think it was a total reversal of the vampire process, which means the ability to have children if said vamp was a healthy human woman of childbearing age pre-transition. This was a pretty big deal for Rebekah, who wants a family (that doesn’t literally stab her in the back) more than anything. We’re not sure if Katherine wants a family, but she did have a daughter when she was human before. The baby was born out of wedlock and was therefore immediately taken from Katherine following her birth, leaving human Katherine devastated. You have to admit: a pregnant Katherine storyline has great dramatic potential, i.e. Katherine finally having to put someone else’s life over her own (well, you know, hopefully). Maybe a person will like her Forget about family, Katherine has been pretty hard up to find friends who aren’t compelled since the days of Pearl and Anna in the 19th century. That’s a long time to be alone. Turning human won’t automatically give her friends — she’s done terrible things that the TVDers aren’t likely to forget anytime soon — but if she plays the “sorry, that time I killed your sibling/parent/best friend, I had my humanity switched off” card a few times, she might just have a chance for, you know, a friend.
