Festivals - Holi -Festival of Colours March 17 2014 This is the time India, and communities all over the globe, explode into colour as the Hindu communities celebrate with abandoned enthusiasm and excitement! Throwing coloured powder and aiming water pistols and mini grenades at everyone in sight. Holi is an ancient Hindu festival mentioned in the Puranas, and celebrates the incoming spring, good over evil, and the triumph of devotion and immortal love. Legend has it, the demon King Hiranyakashyap was furious with his son Prahlad as he refused to worship him above Lord Vishnu. His evil sister Holika took Prahlad in to a blazing fire, wrapping a magical shawl around herself to keep safe and held on to Prahlad hoping he would burn to death. Vishnu saved Prahlad for his devotion, by blowing the shawl off Holika and wrapping it around him, turning the evil Holika to ash. Ever since, on the eve of Holi, large bonfires called Holika are lit to burn evil spirits. It is also the story of the immortal love of Lord Krishna and Radha. As a baby Krishna’s skin turned blue because the she demon Putana poisoned him with her breast milk. Worried that the fair skinned Radha would not like him, his mother told him to go to her and color her face, which he mischievously did. They became a couple and the colouring of her face became a symbol of Holi. In celebration of this, Barsana the birthplace of Radha, Nandgaon, the village of Krishna and Mathura the birthplace of Krishna, celebrations are spread over 16 days.
