In the U.S., this is happening all over Indian Country. They carry so much knowledge of our culture and traditions. Then its gone. Hazel M. Sampson, a member of the Lower Elwha Klallam tribe, was the last person to learn Klallam as their first language; she learned English as her second. There are an estimated 200 Native American languages in the U.S. and Canada; the article informs us that over 100 more are already extinct. Hazel helped her husband, along with linguist Timothy Montler and other native speakers, create a dictionary for the Klallam language, so that future generations will be able to learn the tongue of their tribe.
