In the US and Canada we have been told that the high infant mortality rate which occurred from the late 1800s to the 1960s was due to disease, neglect, unwanted babies and children. Is it possible that the babies and mothers instead died due to: 1. The Medicalization of Childbirth? 2. That many babies died in maternity homes for unwed mothers in Canada and the US, as they did in Ireland by way of neglect, drug experimentation, and starvation by the people and organizations that ran them? We know that the Ideal Maternity Home run by Lila and William Young was responsible for several hundred deaths of babies. This Ideal Maternity Home was in existence from 1925-1945. Hundreds if not thousands of babies who were unadoptable were thrown out to see or buried in butterboxes after being starved to death on a water and molasses diet. We also know that the Grey Nuns of Montreal also killed babies on this same water and molasses diet in the late 1800s. At a very well known maternity home in Montreal run by the Misericode Sisters between 1925 and 1945 40% of unmarried mothers babies died. 40%!!!!!!!! How many other maternity homes killed babies in Canada and the US?
